How to Love Yourself Biblically

"Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, & he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 (NASB)

Or another way to say this is:

“So give yourselves to God. Stand against the devil, & he will run away from you.” (ERV)

What does this verse have to do with loving yourself Biblically you might be asking?

EVERYTHING!

For too long, especially here in Australia, we have been living under the ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’ & this ridiculous mentality has seeped its insidious way into the Body of Christ.

In case you don’t know, the ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’ is best described by this analogy:

Crabs in a bucket

If you put crabs in a bucket they will try to climb to the top to get out. However, the crabs below won’t stand for it & they’ll pull the other crabs back down into the bucket. 

No matter what you do in life, someone will usually be in the stands trying to pull you down.

They can’t have you being a taller poppy than them. They’ve inadvertently stepped into false humility … not a great idea because this is actually pride in disguise.

Loving yourself is really all about WHO you agree with

When you consistently agree with what the enemy says to you - anger, self-preservation, anxiety, depression, self-loathing, & despair are not far behind.

When you agree with what God says to you & about you - peace, life, joy, hope, strength, excitement & anticipation for a great future take over your life. 

Of course, there will be ebbs & flows of feelings, however, you aren’t to be ruled by them. 

When you know the truth of what God says & thinks about you, you can stand on these truths & not be taken out by the enemy. You may be knocked down for a moment … & then you get back up, ready to go again.

This is victorious living.

The above verse tells us to “resist the devil”. 

Resistance training builds muscle strength & bone density. It helps your organs work with greater efficiency as well as many other physical, mental & emotional benefits. God knew what He was doing when He meticulously crafted your body.

When the enemy comes to taunt you with his lies, you get to do resistance training to build your muscles.

Resisting is hard, strenuous, & sometimes exhausting.

(This is the ‘fine print’ in Christianity that you don’t often hear about.)

However, it's what gives your body definition, strength, resilience to injury & disease - both in the natural realm & the spiritual realm.

So the key is to only agree with what God says.

Do you believe lies or believe God?

Surprisingly, both take the same amount of energy to believe.

The enemy is loud & likes attention. He's a bully who will barge his way into your life without an invitation.

God likes to be invited into a relationship & a conversation with you.

It’s time to put all of your focus on how wonderful God is & all of the amazing thoughts He has about you.

Practical Steps

How do you know what God says about you?

• Read the Bible
  • There are so many wonderful verses throughout Scripture that talk about how amazing you are & how you’re passionately loved by the Lord.
  • Genesis 1:26-31 & Psalm 139 are great starts. 

• Prophetic words
  • Reading & listening to received encouraging prophetic words is a great reminder of how the Lord sees you & what He thinks about you. 
  • They can also reignite a dream that may have dimmed its light  

•  Ask the Lord questions  
  
  • … & yes, the answers will be very positive. If they aren’t, it’s the enemy talking.
  • For example:
    • What does the Lord love about you?
    • What does He love doing with you?
    • What brings Him great joy about you?

My prayer for you today ...

Thank You, Lord, for this mighty woman of God.

Thank You that your greatest desire is to be with her.

I pray that You would fan into flame the great passion that this powerful lady has for You.

I pray that she would know today how much You love & adore her. I declare over her today that she is a victorious conqueror who is deeply loved & favoured by You.

May she be strengthened by You & encounter You, each & every day. Amen.
