Something really odd happened to me the other morning that I had never experienced before. It had happened to my husband previously and to be honest, I laughed as I thought he was joking – which is not unusual, his joking I mean.
It was the school holidays and I was thoroughly enjoying an early morning of relaxation in my cosy, warm bed. This is not at all usual. I was reading a book and loving every minute of it. During this time, however, I didn’t realise that I had placed my leg in a weird position. One of my sons had come in to talk to me and see what I was doing. It was now time to get up and start the day. Rats. I got out of bed only to find myself lying flat on my side ….. on the floor! How on earth did I get there?!
On an earlier night, as my husband and I were getting up from the lounge on the way to bed, he landed face down on the floor. I started laughing because I thought ….. well, it was a funniest home video moment. You had to be there. I stopped laughing as soon as I realised he wasn’t joking, although it did take a bit of convincing. He told me that his leg had gone to sleep. I asked, “How on earth did you not know that your leg was asleep? You can’t move it when it’s asleep. You can feel that it’s asleep. How could you not know?” He was adamant that it was indeed asleep before he got up.
On this odd morning, I discovered that he was totally telling the truth. I had moved my leg, like usual, to get out of bed but when I put weight on my right leg, it was not able to hold me up. in fact, I couldn’t feel it at all – hence why I was flat out on the floor. Instantly I was reminded that this is what happened to my husband. How could this be? I could still move my leg. I didn’t get pins and needles but I still couldn’t stand up. I had to wait at least 2 minutes before I could actually stand up to get into the shower.
How did my leg go to sleep and I not know it? Slowly and silently while I was ‘busy’ doing what I wanted. I was totally unaware of what was going on with my own body.
Asleep In The Light
Keith Green wrote a fantastic song called, “Asleep In The Light.” I had become slack in reading my Bible, spending time with Jesus and praying for others. I was slipping into a false sense of security in my walk with the Lord. I was going to ‘sleep’. A very sad admission but true nonetheless.
Can you relate to this? Do you love to get into the Word and see what Holy Spirit will reveal to you? Do you long to just sit with Jesus and hear what He has to say to you today? Or have these become items on your ‘To Do’ list, more monotonous tasks that need to be done? No judgment here. On this day, I realised that I had turned my relationship with Jesus into a ‘To Do’ list. Yikes!
You and me are called to be the ‘light of the world’ (Matthew 5:14). Your light only shines bright when you spend time with Jesus in worship and prayer, when you are filling your spirit and soul with the Word of God. Jesus is THE true Light of the world. You always need more of HIM in your life. I do too. You can’t give out of what you don’t have. If you have no money in your bank account, how can you take out money to bless someone else? You can’t. You don’t have it so you can’t give it.
The Light of Jesus is the same. For you to be a shining light in the dark parts of the world around you, you need to be filled with the Light of Jesus.
It’s Time To Wake Up.
The ‘Church’, (that’s you and me) needs to be awake to know what Jesus is doing and also, to know the enemy’s schemes and plans. Right before Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, He was frustrated that His disciples couldn’t stay awake to discern what was actually happening. He told them that they must stay awake and ‘watch and pray’ so that they would not fall into temptation. Jesus had to wake them up Himself to tell them that the ‘hour had come’ for His betrayal (Mark 14:32-42).
Do you need to be woken up by Jesus?
We must stay awake to be aware of what is going on around us – both for what God is doing and what the enemy is hatching.
Sit With Jesus Today And Don’t Delay.
May I challenge you today to take 10 minutes out of your day to sit quietly and be intentionally ‘awake‘. Ask Jesus to come and sit with you and you be aware of His presence. Take your Bible and read what comes to mind. If nothing comes, pick a Psalm. Ask the Lord to give you eyes to see and ‘ears to hear’ what the Spirit is saying (Revelation 2:29). Ask Jesus to reveal to you what is on His heart for you to know.
Pray like you haven’t prayed before. Commit to praying for 2 people in your life who don’t have a relationship with Jesus. Put a reminder in your phone or on your computer to pray for these 2 people at a specific time each and every day. Pray that God will draw them to Himself and reveal Jesus to them (John 6:44). Then watch God move!
Jesus loves you – NO MATTER WHAT. Commit to seeking Him daily. He is worth it!
Have a fantastic week.
