I love reading. It’s one of my most favourite things to do. I am fully convinced that my home in Heaven will actually be a library lined with all my favourite books, (in height order so I know where they are located – don’t ask) as well as all the books that I would have liked to have read in my lifetime. There are just too many on my list and new, brilliant books are written and published all the time. I would need to live to be 1000 years old and it still wouldn’t be enough time to devour every word. Anyone out there who’s with me? Anyone?
I understand know that not everyone has this same driving passion and that’s ok. It just got me thinking. I receive so much revelation, instruction, ideas, insight, knowledge, opinions, truth, facts, information from all that I read. I don’t enjoy fiction often but I love to devour anything that I can learn from.
During a time of writing, I came across some very familiar verses about the ‘Parable of the Sower’. I stopped and pondered over the words this time. Something jumped out at me that I had not seen before.
In Mark Chapter 4, Jesus tells a parable of seed falling into different types of soil. This seed, of course, is representative of the Word of God and His revelation that is sown into our lives.
Here is the thought that jumped out at me:
It is actually US who decides the readiness and the fertility of the soil in our lives that holds onto the seed – to grow it until it is established, and is strong enough to bear fantastic, ripe fruit.
We can make our own soil fertile!
The soil, of course, represents the heart or really the soul. Your soul is made up of your mind, your will and your emotions. Everything that you think, feel, or do stems directly from this place.
How can you fertilise your soul?
BY BEING WILLING TO LEARN – be a continual, life-long learner of all things JESUS.
What are you reading at the moment? It’s ok if you are not a reader, not everyone is. What are you listening to and watching? Are they things that you are learning from or are they just vessels of escapism?
I understand that we all need ‘down time’ occasionally, especially those who have demanding roles to play in their lives but ….. what are you filling your soul with?
Obviously, the best way to fertilise your heart, as it were, is to feast on the words of the Bible. Spend even just 10 minutes a day reading a chapter. The more you read, the more you get hungry for it. As you do, remember to ask God for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a mind to understand what the Spirit is saying. God will honour your prayers.
Another way is to take time out, in a quiet place, and spend time with God ….. alone. This can be hard but the bathroom is often a place I hide just to get 5 minutes alone with God. Set your alarm for 10, 20 or 30 minutes earlier in the morning and make this a sacred time between you and your Heavenly Father. He will meet you right where you’re at. He LOVES hanging out and having one-on-one time with you.
If you get your heart hungry for God, He will fill you with the most amazing delights of His revelation, His love, His direction, His empowerment, His everything that He wants to bless you with. All you need to do is get your heart ready for it.
Practical Step
May I suggest that you take time with God this week and ask Him how you can get your heart ready for His Word and revelation. Ask your Father how He would like to speak with you. I can promise you, you won’t regret it. It might be difficult at the start but stick at it, it will be worth it. Your life will never be the same if you make it a habit to spend time daily reading the Bible and spending one-on-one time with God.
I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Please leave a comment below so we can encourage one another.
As always dear friends, I pray many blessings to pour over you this week.
