Key #7 Sing Your Victory Song

We are discussing weapons to use against the demonic realm. (For the previous 6 weapons, see the links at the bottom of this post.)

This one might seem a bit weird but it is true. Singing is a real weapon of warfare. Just look at all the Psalms that were written specifically to sing! There’s too many to list.

Singing brings joy and peace.

I have an amazing auntie who sings at the top of her lungs to bring joy to her soul. It’s fantastic!

I know how good it makes me feel to sing and dance around the lounge room with the younger children to Colin Buchanan’s songs. My favourite is “God Rock“. (Is it sad to say that I actually have a signed copy by the man himself? It’s handy to have children – ha ha.) Singing out Scripture and God filled songs brings healing to the soul, releases dopamine in the brain and makes you feel down right amazing!

There’s another type of language that we can sing with.

Singing in tongues – using your spiritual language.

The Apostle Paul says that he wishes that all would speak in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:5). He also said that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else (1 Corinthians 14:18), and look at the revelations he received from Heaven! There’s something to this otherwise Paul would not have been passionately speaking about it.

“A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally.”  1 Corinthians 14:4 (NLT)

Dr Jonathan Welton likens this to strengthening the temple walls (that would be you if you have Holy Spirit in you), so that God’s revelation can be poured in and be contained within you. I love this!

Please note: I am only talking about the times when you speak with God in prayer, not addressing a group of people which you then need an interpreter for (I Corinthians 14:5).

Julie Meyer speaks about how singing in tongues uses the top lobes of your brain. Singing in a spiritual language engages both sides of the brain and the enemy can’t interrupt your singing with his lies.

I had to admit that I thought, “Sure,” until I tried it. It actually works! There was a day when the enemy was bombarding me with lies that I had already dealt with. It was an onslaught and I was tired of it. I remembered hearing Julie say that you won’t hear the lies and the taunts if we sing in tongues. I did and it wasn’t long at all until I could no longer hear his voice. My mind became peaceful. I did for as long as it took for my emotions and my thoughts to come under control – which was about 10 minutes. After I stopped, the enemy tried again, I told him to be quiet and got about my day. Fantastic!

I know a lot of Believers say that they don’t need tongues and that they don’t want to do it. You don’t have to but I have found it to be invaluable over the years. If you have Holy Spirit living in you then you have the capability to speak in tongues. It’s Holy Spirit that gives the power to do so. It has nothing to do with your salvation or God loving you. It’s just a bonus gift that you have access to.

The How To

Singing the Scriptures

You don’t have to be a singer, you can even be tone deaf and this will still work for you.
Here are some tips to get you started:

• Pick your favourite few verses, even one verse, or a whole chapter
• Make up a tune and start singing the words of the Scripture
• If you don’t feel comfortable making up your own tune, pick a song that you like and replace the original words with Scripture
• Sing your heart out!
• Sing the same thing over and over. This way, not only will you be ‘Strengthened personally’ but you will  be memorising the Bible while you’re at it. Fantastic!

Singing in Tongues

If you have never spoken in tongues before, it might be easier for you to sing in tongues.

Firstly, let me pray for you.

Father God, I ask that you would fill this beautiful child of God to overflowing with even more of your Holy Spirit. I ask that You will baptise them with fire and power and unlock their ability to speak and sing in tongues. Fill them with overflowing love and joy until they can stand it no more. We thank You for You, God. Amen.

• Play a worship song that you love and that touches your heart
• Sit in a quiet place
• Thank God for the gift of Holy Spirit
• As you listen to the music, begin to utter sounds. It can be as simple as “La, la, la” or “Daa, daa, daa”.
• Close your eyes, if that helps, and sing. Holy Spirit will begin giving you words to sing. You can use these same words in speaking too. They will probably be two or three words or a short phrase. That’s exactly right. Keep going.
• Enjoy being in the Lord’s presence and spend time with Him.

You are in total control the whole time. You can stop and start at anytime. Tongues is used to edify and build yourself up. It might feel weird at first if you are not used to it. May I encourage you to persevere. You will get to the point where you can do it anytime, anywhere. It builds faith and makes you a strong container for God’s revelations.
