The Power of the Mind

The Power of the Mind

christian life Sep 20, 2019

Today I am going to tell you the story of the day I bought a $42 bottle of Coca Cola.

Well not literally … but kind of.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation and you wondered how on earth you got there?

I have …. many times. Let me share.

From my very first thought of wanting a drink of Coke, when I wasn’t even going to the shops, to the point of being at a takeaway shop buying a $42.00, 600ml bottle of Coke. How did I get there?

A few years ago, we had had a great morning of homeschooling, everyone was occupied and then, my thought went to food. That was not an uncommon thing back then, the me thinking about food part. I know, I know. It’s bad. God has thankfully healed me of this addiction since.

Anyhoo, I was thinking about food and I then began thinking about the bottle of Coke. I already know how bad it is for me yet, I thought, “It would be really nice to have one now.” Instead of ‘taking captive every thought’ like I should have done, my mouth started salivating and I got into thinking that I needed a reward for our great morning’s work. Yes, I am embarrased by my thought process but bear with me, there is a point.

The Train Got On The Tracks

I tried to work out how I could justify myself going out and buying myself a bottle. Hmmm. I know (insert lightbulb here). I could go and buy hot chips for my beautifully behaved children and buy myself a Coke. Yeah! Great idea. (Really?!)

Can you see how powerful the mind is?

As I was driving home, with the car now smelling of fat, the realisation of what happened hit me. “I just paid $42.00 for a 600ml bottle of Coke. What was I thinking? How did that happen?”

I thought about the process and how it actually DID happen and realised that it all started with 1 little thought. ‘Gee. A bottle of Coke would be really nice.’ Right there. Right there is where I should have dragged myself into a corner and said, “What are you thinking (literally)? You don’t need that. How else could you use the money that you are about to spend?” “All that bad fat, carbohydrate and sugar.” ………. but no.

My first thought was moving like a freight train through my mind until I finally put the train on the tracks and set it in motion.

It Only Takes One Thought!

Isn’t that like everything? It all starts with one thought. What if I had changed the thought and wondered, what could I make the children for lunch today that would be a bit different? I would still have $42.00 in my pocket and I would not have felt so sick from eating foods that I know really don’t agree with me. The children were grateful, however, but I had just fed them food that wasn’t good for them.

There is a reason why the Bible says to “take every thought captive to obey Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Your thoughts are what lead you to your actions.

BUT …

You HAVE The Mind of Christ!

If you have Holy Spirit living inside of you and you have submitted your life to Jesus, you HAVE the mind of Christ. Isn’t that fantastic!

This means that you have the ability and capacity to think like Jesus, act like Jesus, and talk like Jesus. You can know His thoughts at any given moment. You can know Heavenly secrets as He reveals them to you and you can search them out. You can receive Kingdom solutions for any earthly problem. This truly is miraculous!

I have shared my story of depression with many people and explained how it took one thought to get myself into the mess and it took one thought and hard work to get out of that said mess.

(You can read about what I believe a major part of fear, anxiety and depression is here and steps to take to get out of it.)

Depression is a cruel tormentor. In the spirit realm it looks like a thick, tarpaulin-like blanket that covers the upper half of the body. It can feel like you are suffocating. This blanket keeps the freedom, light and hope of life out. It makes you believe you are trapped in a prison cell and that you can’t get out.

It lies!

Jesus died and rose again to set you free – FROM EVERYTHING! No exception!

The thing is, you first have to make the decision to change the negative situation you are in, no matter what it is. It just takes one thought.

“As we shall see, however, this simple choice may be the greatest kind of struggle any human being can face, and it may call forth the greatest courage and dedication.”

“Addiction and Grace” by Gerald G May, M.D. Pg 19

It is so true. To be free of anything it begins with one thought. Just one. One decision. Decide that you no longer want to live how you are and get to work. Did I say it was easy? No way! The quote above says it all. It is hard and it will hurt but in the long run, you will experience true freedom and those around you will be able to rejoice with you.

It just takes one thought and one decision to begin.

God created an absolutely genius machine when He created you and me. You are capable of so much than you ever imagine!

You were created to rule and reign with Jesus on this earth – TODAY! (2 Tim 2:12)

You were created to be more than a conqueror. MORE than one. How is that possible!

If you would like a list of just some of who you are called to be in the Better Covenant with Jesus and who you truly are in Him, you can check them out here and here.

Can you relate to my story? If yes, think of a time when you did something that maybe you didn’t want to do. Work backwards and try and discover what was the first thought you had that took you to the final result. Once you find that, what would have been a different thought that you could have used, and where do you think that would have taken you? Share in the comments below.
