Have you ever wondered what Communion means for you today?
Why is it important?
Dining With Your Hero
Imagine that you are sitting at a long table with all of your friends and your best friend, your hero, is sitting right next to you. You have all been on missions trips together, you have seen them at their best and their worst (and they have seen you), you have witnessed so many miracles your head still spins as you recall them … this is the best time of your entire life! Could life get any better? While you are enjoying being taught by your hero, your business is flourishing without you there, your every need is being met by those who support and love you, what could possibly go wrong?
You are relishing a beautiful meal that was cooked by the hands of another. The smells of the delicious food bring such joy to your soul. You are all laughing together, recalling the miracles that you have seen then suddenly, your hero brings the mood down to a sombre stillness and begins saying that he has to go away. Shocked, you put down your bread and focus intently upon your teacher, leader and mentor.
“What do you mean you’re going away? I didn’t really think you were serious. What do I do without you?”
Your hero picks up some bread and wine and tells you and everyone else at the table, that when they meet together in the future and have this special celebratory meal together, that they are to ‘remember him’.
“What? What am I to remember? I don’t understand.”
These might be just some of the confusing and panicking thoughts that might rush through your head if this was to happen to you.
What do you think?
Have you thought about what it would have been like for the disciples who had this scenario happen to them? They were enjoying a meal with Jesus, celebrating a very significant Jewish Feast, Passover, only to then hear Him say that they were remember Him. Why? Where was He going?
He had not died on the cross yet when He instructed them to “Remember Him”, so what were they to remember? They had no idea what He was talking about.
There was no coincidence that our Lord Jesus made His trek back to Jerusalem in time for the Passover celebrations. This was the time when the Jews celebrated being rescued from under Egypt’s tyrannical rule, back in the day of Moses. Just as they did back then, the Jewish people would sacrifice a lamb. Little did they or the disciples know that this would be the last time that any type of sacrificial slaughter would need to be made.
Jesus was the last sacrificial lamb that took away ALL the sins of the world. This is why we can now live a free life. He closed the chapter of the Old Covenant and instituted a Better Covenant of forgiveness of sin, individual relationship with Father God through Holy Spirit, the ability to walk in power and see miracles, and resurrection life. Wow and WOW!
So, what’s the deal with communion?
Have you been encouraged to ‘see’ Jesus on the cross and all that He suffered? Have you been told to envision the beatings, the whippings, the crucifixion? According to Isaiah 53, Jesus was whipped and beaten beyond recognition. I don’t know that Jesus would like this to be the only thing that He was remembered for.
As I was having communion with our family, the Lord said to me, “What is it about Jesus that I want you to remember?” I was taken aback by the question. I went over the passage in my mind and I realised that when Jesus said to remember Him to the disciples, He had not died yet. Yes, He had pre-warned them that He was going to die (Matt 26:2) but they still didn’t really understand.
Would you have?
So, what were the disciples to remember?
Jesus’ life. How He lived. How He prayed. How He interacted with people.
How He loved.
Jesus is the exact representation of His Father, our Heavenly Father (Col 1:15).
The Lord said to me that He doesn’t want us to just focus on Jesus’ death, even though this is the foundation of the Christian’s faith and life. Without this, we would not have relationship with the Father, we would not be forgiven, we would not have the power to transform this world for the Kingdom, and we would definitely not have eternal life with Him.
What else is there to focus on?
Because of the whipping and scourging, because of the blood, the cross, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you and me can now live the life that Jesus lived when He walked on the earth.
REALLY, REALLY!
We can’t have one without the other.
If you have accepted that Jesus is your Lord and Saviour – meaning you live for Him now and not yourself – then you have the capacity and the mandate to live as Jesus did.
(If you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus, you can talk to Him right now and ask Him to reveal Himself to you. Get yourself to a church that teaches the Bible and begin the most amazing relationship that you could ever dream of. Jesus loves you so passionately. Your life will never be the same. Contact me either in the comments below or send me an email here as I would love to rejoice with you.)
Jesus’ commission to the disciples, and to you and me in Mark 16:17-18, is that in Jesus’ mighty Name you WILL cast out demons, you WILL speak with new tongues; you WILL pick up serpents (defeat the works of the demonic realm), and if you drink any deadly poison, it WILL NOT hurt you; you WILL lay hands on the sick, and they WILL recover.”
This was a command … not a suggestion.
If you are a Believer, you need to be healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out demons, changing atmospheres, transmitting peace into every situation, moving mountains and revealing Jesus to everyone you meet – out of your relationship with Jesus. Holy Spirit is the One who gives you this ability.
If you are not doing this, then it might be time to ask why not. It takes time and practise but why not start today? What better way to live than to transform your life, your family and the world with Christ’s freedom and love!
There is no condemnation here, just an invitation to do more, see more, and be more.
Communion is a reminder to you and me of what Jesus has done for us and what we need to be doing for Jesus in return. He gave us His life so that we can demonstrate His life and love to others through words, deeds and a completely transformed life.
Maybe you don’t feel worthy. The Lord, in all His goodness, keeps reminding me that it’s not about what I do, it’s about who He is. He is your Heavenly Father. He LOVES to bless His sons and daughters. He loves giving things away a gazillion times more than me or you do.
Limiting Beliefs Can Definitely Stop You!
Part of the problem why you may be struggling with this is that you may have been told that you are a sinner, that you are so undeserving, unworthy, wretched and it’s better to ‘give than to receive’. The problem with the former is that it’s talking about our actions (not us as people) BEFORE we had a relationship with Jesus, not after. The problem with the latter is that someone has to receive in order for someone to give!
Being Biblically ‘unworthy’ just means that there is nothing that you could do, in your own effort, that could earn God’s favour, mercy, love or grace. Your works are not worthy to earn any of these things. However, just because we exist makes us worthy. When my babies were born, they were worthy of my love simply because they existed. I love them because they are mine. God is the same. He loves you, me and everyone, simply because He created you and you are His. He loves everyone, whether people know Him or not.
Just as God anointed Jesus, you too are anointed in the same way. You can do what Jesus did and even greater things can you do (John 14:12).
** This is also what communion is about! **
Encouragement for you today
“Jesus of Nazareth was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit and with great power. He did wonderful things for others and divinely healed all who were under the tyranny of the devil, for God had anointed him.”
Acts 10:38 (TPT)
“You must continually bring healing to lepers and to those who are sick, and make it your habit to break off the demonic presence from people, and raise the dead back to life. Freely you have received the power of the kingdom, so freely release it to others.”
Matt 10:8 (TPT)
“‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.”
Matt 6:10 (NASB)
You are a son or a daughter of the Most High God.
You have relationship with the Creator of the universe!
There is nothing more special than this.
This too is what you are capable of. The same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead and completely restored His broken body lives in you. The same Holy Spirit that did miracles wherever Jesus went now lives in you.
Isn’t that fantastic!
What now?
So, what do you do now? May I suggest that the next time you take communion, you could begin by thanking Jesus for all that He went through on the cross for you. Then, think of an area of Jesus’ life that you might want to emulate Him in. For example, when he healed the boy and gave him his mind back (Mark 9), or when Jesus provided a meal for over 5,000 men, plus all the women and children (Matt 14), or when Jesus simply loved the woman when she was offering her love to Him (Mark 14). Find an action of Jesus that resonates with your heart. Take this into your time with Jesus and imagine what it would have been like to witness this miracle first hand. How do you think and feel? What are you seeing? What are you sensing Jesus’ heart to be at this time?
Be in the moment. What Jesus did is possible for you too!
Note: I am not a theologian or a scholar. These are some of the revelations that I have received because of the questions that have I asked the Lord. I am sure that 1,000 books could not contain all the revelation there is to know about communion. Communion brings healing to your entire body, it brings freedom to your mind, it strengthens your relationship with Jesus, it places Jesus in His rightful place in our lives – as Lord of all.
I just know a small part of this deep miracle, and this part I share with you.
I pray it brings you encouragement today.
Please let me know your thoughts. I would love to hear from you. What part stood out to you the most? Please share below.
Abundant blessings to you always,
