What To Do When God Seems Far Away

What To Do When God Seems Far Away

christian life Jul 23, 2019

“Separation from God is simply an illusion.”

Chris Gore – Bethel Healing Rooms

Have you ever felt like God was so far away from you? Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “If you feel far from God, it’s not Him who moved.”

God cannot move away from you and as Chris Gore says, “You are a Believer NOT a Feeliever.” Love that!

If you ‘feel’ far from God, you can be rest assured that it is a lie straight from the pit of hell. As I teach my children to say to the demons, “Talk to the hand ‘cos the ears ain’t listening!”

The thing is, if the enemy can get you to agree with this lie, he has just rendered you less powerful than who you really are.

Keys to Combat the Lies

The Sword of the Word of God – Bible Verses

Psalm 139

One of my most favourite passages of Scripture in the Bible is Psalm 139. When I feel distanced from God I look here.

King David says that it doesn’t matter where he goes, he cannot get away from God. Isn’t that so comforting? I read it out loud so that it gets into my spirit and mind both ways – through my eyes and ears. It’s also so the enemy can hear it and he hates the Word!

Colossians 1:27

Christ is in you so He goes everywhere with you. You can’t get away from Him, no matter how hard you try.

Ephesians 2:6

You have been raised up and are now seated in Heavenly realms with Christ. Not in the future but now. How can you be away from God when you are seated with Him?

Hebrews 13:5b

Jesus promised that He will NEVER leave you or forsake you and since He will not lie (1 Sam 15:29), you can take Him at His word.

Memorise some of these and other verses that touch your heart. The Bible, worship, prayer and thanksgiving are the mightiest weapons you have. Use them as a sword to put the devil back in his place.

Practise the Art of Adoration

Begin the practice of intentionally turning your thoughts to the Lord regularly throughout your day.

I have an alarm on my phone that makes a small beep sound every 15 minutes after a dear friend gave me the idea. I set it that way so that each time I hear it, I intentionally turn my heart and thoughts to Father God and Jesus. I spend a few moments just thanking them for loving me, for always being there and for being so wonderfully good. I purposely remember the amazing things that they have done for me, the miracles I have seen and the situations and blessings that they have organised … just because they love me.

God has no favourites (Rom 2:11) and if you sit quietly and think about it, you will see all the incredible things that He has done for you too.

Make a List

When you are in an easier time and you are not as weighed down with burdens, make a list of the miracles you have seen – no matter how small. My beautiful friend messaged me today to tell me how blessed she was to see whales while she was out for a day on the sea with her husband. The whales just ‘happened’ to be there.

Maybe someone did something special for you that really touched your heart. Maybe God organised for items that you needed at the supermarket to be on sale. Maybe you were watching a sunset and you felt God’s presence rest upon you and He was letting you know that He was enjoying the view with you.

The idea is so that in the difficult times when you may begin to wonder where God is, you read through this list and remind yourself that your Heavenly Father truly is with you. Right now, He might just be working more behind the scenes rather than in front of your face, but He never leaves you …. ever!

He’s that good!

Your Enemy, the Devil, is Defeated!

Jesus took the power of sin and death away from Satan and rendered him powerless (Heb 2:14). Satan is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44) so lies are his native language. He can’t do much else but he is very clever at making lies sound like truth. Have you noticed that?

Despite what you may have heard in the past, the negative thoughts that just seem to drop out of nowhere into your head, are actually demons talking to you. It is they that drop these cruel negativities into your mind and then have the gall to tell you they’re from you. No they’re not!

When they come to lie to you with these negative thoughts, remind them where they need to be – under your feet. If you can hear them talking in your mind, then they are higher than they’re supposed to be. Luke 10:19 NASB says:

“Behold, I have given YOU AUTHORITY TO TREAD ON serpents and scorpions, and over ALL THE POWER OF THE ENEMY, and nothing will injure you.”

Have you ever noticed the consequence that God gave the devil in Genesis 3, after he got caught tempting Adam and Eve?

“Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
ON YOUR BELLY YOU WILL GO
AND DUST YOU WILL EAT
ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE;

Genesis 3:14 (NASB)

Right from the beginning, God placed Satan on the ground to reinforce that beneath our feet is where he belongs.

How do You Place Your Enemy Under Your Feet?

The enemy and their wicked, tormenting, evil, condemning thoughts are all meant to be under your feet. You are to destroy every thought that is not of God, take those thoughts captive and make them obey Christ (2 Cor 10:5).

You have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16) so you can think exactly how Jesus does. That in itself is absolutely incredible.

“You cannot afford to have any thought about yourself that God is not thinking about you.”

Bill Johnson – Bethel Church, Redding, California

The second that you have realised that a thought has made it’s way into your mind that you know does not bring life, put up your hand and say, “Talk to the hand ‘cos the ears ain’t listening.” Rebuke that thought and tell it to leave. Immediately begin to replace it with a life giving thought, eg. “God loves me with an everlasting love” (Jer 31:3). “Jesus said He would never leave me and I choose to believe that He is here with me right now.” “There is nowhere in creation that I could go where God isn’t with me.” “I am never alone.”

Got it?

Remind the tormentor that he needs to be back under your feet. Stamp your foot on the ground as a prophetic sign to yourself and your enemy that you are now back in charge and that under your feet is where he needs to stay.

The demons have to flee as you draw closer to your Heavenly Father.

Final Thoughts …

Guilt and shame can cause you to try and hide your face from God. He sees you and He looks at you with eyes so full of love – no matter what you have done. No shame, no guilt, no sin will cause Him to withhold His love from you. He can’t because God IS love.

Come to Him today, just as you are. Turn your face Heavenward and tell Father God that you want to live a better life and that you want to receive His love. You don’t ever want to be without Him involved in your life again. You will decide to have a deeper relationship with Him simply because He loves you.

Just remember ….

… Jesus promised to never leave you nor forsake you,

and …

“Separation from God is simply an illusion.”

You are more than a conqueror and nothing shall be impossible for those who believe.

That’s you!
