Let me be very clear – God NEVER hates people. He doesn’t. He wouldn’t. He can’t!
So, why does God hate sin so much? I believe this is a really important question.
God IS Love ….
…. that’s what the Bible says in 1 John 4:8. We have to understand that God doesn’t just feel love, act out of love, or believe in love. His very nature IS love. His love is so pure that there is no falsehood, wickedness or sin in Him. Therefore, there can be no falsehood, wickedness or sin in Heaven. If there were, Heaven would be just like earth and who would want that? Seriously, it’s hard enough doing it once, and as wonderful as life is, would you really like to live with fear and pain for all eternity?
I believe there are 6 main reasons why God hates sin so much:
- Sin separates you from relationship with your Heavenly Father (Isaiah 59:2)
- Sin grieves your Heavenly Father’s heart (Ephesians 4:30)
- Sin prevents you from going into Heaven after you die (Romans 6:23, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
- Sin opens the door for the enemy (Satan and his minions) to come and attack you (Genesis 3)
- Sin hurts those around you (Mark 7:21-22)
- …. and I believe a HUGE reason why God hates sin is because it HURTS YOU!
Let’s define what sin is first. The Strong’s Concordance states:
- to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize)
- to wander from the law of God, violate God’s law, sin
- to miss or wander from the path of uprightness and honour, to do or go wrong
Basically if you disobey God in ANY way, not just the Ten Commandments. If you don’t love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbour as yourself as He commands you to (Matthew 22:37-39) – you (and I) have sinned.
This is how serious sin is. Jesus CHOSE to die for you so that you don’t have to be separated from God for all eternity and spend it in hell – because of your sin.
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was crushed for our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing]; The punishment [required] for our well-being fell on Him, And by His stripes (wounds) we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (AMP)
“So put everything evil out of your life: sexual sin, doing anything immoral, letting sinful thoughts control you, and wanting things that are wrong. And don’t keep wanting more and more for yourself, which is the same as worshipping a false god.” Colossians 3:5 (ERV)
All of these things hurt YOU and those around you. If you are a loving parent, don’t you do all that you can to prevent your children from getting hurt, hurting each other and other people? God is a parent too and He is exactly the same. He doesn’t want His children being hurt or hurting others either.
When you (and me) are disobedient to God’s way of doing things, ‘sin crouches at your door’ (Genesis 4:7) to lead you astray and create havoc in your life. When our children are disobedient, I tell them that they chose the disobedient option and therefore they choose the unfavourable consequence that is attached to that disobedient choice. If they had have chosen the obedient way, then they would have received a favourable consequence. Either way, it’s a choice. You choose either obedience or disobedience and with that, you choose the type of consequence that comes with it.
When you disobey God’s ways, sin enters, it gives access to the devil and havoc is created. This can be in the form of sickness, accidents, negative situations, arguments, you name it – the list goes on.
BUT WAIT …… There’s Good News!
God really does know best.
“The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I (Jesus) came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].“ John 10:10 (AMP)
Jesus has made it simple for us to be with Him, washed clean of all our sin and the sin done to us by others, so that we can spend eternity with Him. Wow!
To be washed clean of our sins is not only for the benefit of access into Heaven after we die. It’s benefits are for the here and now.
Hurting people hurt people. I am sure you have heard this before and it is incredibly true. Just this past weekend I was hurt very deeply by someone else who I know is deeply wounded themselves. Not that it excused their behaviour, but it gives me more compassion towards them and I am able to pray that the Lord will heal their wounds, as well as mine.
This is what Jesus’ blood and resurrection power (dunamis – Philippians 3:10) do. The blood washes away your sin from your soul (Leviticus 17) and dunamis heals the wounds (Ephesians 3:16).
This is why God hates sin. It creates wounds in your soul that cause you to sin even more, hurt other people and it creates distance between you and God along the way (Romans 7:19-20). Not good!
Jesus has made a way for you to get rid of the sin in your life.
We all have it. Confess, or just tell God the sin that you have committed, ask Him to forgive you, receive His blood and imagine it flooding over you, in you and through you to wash your soul clean. Ask God to release the resurrection power of Holy Spirit (dunamis) into your soul to heal the wounds of the sins that you have committed and the sins committed against you. Receive this by faith in the precious and wonderful Name of Jesus.
All done. It’s as simple as that. Obviously you need to do this with each sin that Holy Spirit reveals to you but Jesus really did finish it all at the cross – both in His death and resurrection.
As always, I would love to know your thoughts and if you would like prayer or have anything worthy of praise, comment in the box below or send me an email via the contact page and I’ll get right back to you.
I pray this encourages you today and helps you understand a little more about why God hates sin.
Remember, He NEVER hates you – no matter what you do. He loves you so desperately that He has put a plan in place so that you can have intimate relationship with Him here on earth, as well as in Heaven.
GOD IS SO GOOD!
Many blessings to you.
